The hotel

Posada San Rafael is a historic posada on the edge of Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, the main square of Pátzcuaro in the Michoacán highlands of Mexico. Guests pass through arched corridors and sunlit courtyards that have sheltered travellers for generations. The building keeps the character of a colonial townhouse: white walls, terracotta floors, wooden doors and a stone fountain in the inner patio, with the cathedral bell marking the hours from the square outside.

Rooms

Sixty-three rooms are arranged around the courtyards and a long arched corridor, so no two of them are laid out quite the same. Each room has a comfortable bed and a private bathroom. Some open toward the plaza and the basilica, others face the quieter inner patios where the fountain runs. Rooms are simple and restful rather than grand, and the front desk helps guests choose between a room for a couple, a room for a family and something suited to a longer stay.

Dining

The restaurant serves traditional Michoacán cooking: hand-pressed corn tortillas, salsas ground in a molcajete, and dishes that follow the season and the market. A café opens in the morning with coffee from the Michoacán highlands, fresh bread and cakes, and the bar keeps the courtyard lively into the evening with cocktails such as the house mojito.

Parking

Parking is private, gated and off the street, in a courtyard lot inside the property. Street parking in the historic center is scarce and the cobbled lanes are narrow, so guests drive in, unload at the door and leave the car there for the length of the stay. The hotel describes the lot as the only private parking on Plaza Vasco de Quiroga.

Getting here

Pátzcuaro sits in the Michoacán highlands, roughly an hour by car from Morelia and its international airport. The hotel is inside the historic center at Calle Ponce de León 18, a few steps from the plaza, so the last part of the journey is easiest on foot. The basilica, the Casa de los Once Patios artisan market, the Museum of Popular Arts and the pier for boats to Janitzio Island on Lake Pátzcuaro are all within walking distance, and the town's markets, cafés and restaurants begin at the front door.
